BGE Smart Home Motion Sensors

What Is a Motion Sensor?

BGE Smart Home motion sensors detect motion in your home using infrared technology. Motion sensors help your BGE Smart Home detect when you enter or leave a room and can be set up to automatically turn lights on and off and adjust the thermostat to make sure you’re comfortable and your home is also energy efficient.

The motion sensor can detect motion up to approximately 25 feet during the day and at night. It is designed to detect movement from larger objects – like people – while ignoring movement from smaller objects like pets.

Installing Your Motion Sensors

We recommend installing motion sensors in frequently occupied living spaces and near exterior doors, where they can help determine occupancy and adjust your lights, compatible thermostat and smart plug. Here are some ideas on where to put the motion sensor:

  • Hallway
  • Living room
  • Kitchen
  • Basement
  • Entryway
  • Bathroom
  • Stairwell

Motion sensors must be installed indoors and are best in open areas with high foot traffic. For optimal coverage, place a motion sensor in rooms you walk through when entering or leaving your home. Avoid pointing them toward the floor, as they might sense pet activity. Also avoid pointing them at heating vents and windows, as they will falsely detect motion based on heat.

Avoid pointing your motion sensor directly at a window, as objects outside the window might trigger false alarms. Do not place it outdoors and do not install it in a location where it will point directly at the sun.

Consider placing motion sensors high on a shelf to avoid pet activity below, while eliminating the use of fastening hardware. Or attach the mount in a room’s corner on a ceiling or wall, making sure the sensor itself remains upright.

Tip: The motion sensor performs best when placed in a location where it has a line of sight into a room or hallway, especially in places where people are expected to cross. You might use the screws provided to install the motion sensor on a ceiling, or you can use the motion sensor’s bracket to set it on a shelf or mantle.

Pairing a Motion Sensor

Step 1: From the home screen in the app, tap Cameras & Devices > Add Devices >  Motion Sensor to begin pairing the motion sensor to the gateway.

Step 2: Examining the motion sensor, you will see the small plastic pull tab. After starting the motion sensor pairing process in the app, pull out the plastic tab completely, while in the same room as your gateway. Ensure the battery compartment is closed completely. The blinking green light indicates it is in pairing mode and searching for the gateway.

Step 3: When the motion sensor connects, the app will automatically advance. Name your motion sensor (living room, garage, etc.) and tap Next to continue. The motion sensor will blink red the first several times it detects motion. After that, to preserve battery life, it will not blink when motion is detected.

Step 4: Select how you want to use your motion sensor by following the prompts on screen. Tap Next to continue.

Step 5: In the app, tap Done to continue. The app will return to the Cameras & Devices screen. Repeat these steps for installation of additional sensors.

Tip: If the motion sensor did not pair, press and hold the red button between the batteries on the back for four seconds to reset the sensor. Then tap the red button once briefly to pair the sensor with the gateway. If your sensor is still unable to pair with your gateway, refer to the reset instructions in the FAQ section below.

Creating Custom Rules

Here are some ideas for creating custom rules for your BGE Smart Home motion sensors:

Goal Required Sensors Sample Rule

I'd like to have my living room lamp turn on when I get home from work at night.

✔ Motion Sensor – Place in room adjacent to commonly used door when coming home from work.
✔ Smart LED – Use a smart LED in a lamp that you would like to turn on. Make sure the lamp is switched on so that the smart LED is always powered.

If

my 'Living Room Motion Sensor' detects motion

when the time is between 7:00 pm every day and 12:00 am

then

make my 'Living Room Lamp' switch on

How can I make sure my son's playroom light goes out when unoccupied?

✔ Motion Sensor – Place in playroom.

✔ Smart LED – Use a smart LED in a lamp that you would like to turn on. Make sure this lamp is switched on so that the smart LED is always powered.

If

my 'Playroom Motion Sensor' does not detect motion for 5 minutes

then

make my 'Playroom Lamp' switch off

I'd like to receive an alert if there is motion in my house while I'm at work.

✔ Motion Sensor – Make sure your motion sensors are placed in a high traffic areas.

If

my 'Family Room Motion Sensor' detects motion

when the time is between 8:00 am every day and 5:00 pm

then

notify me on my phone

Tip: Motions sensors have a default scenario that will alert you if motion is detected while you are in 'Away' mode. To prevent these alerts, you can select the 'Skip' option within the motion sensors settings in the Scenario menu.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Do You Reset the Motion Sensor?

If the motion sensor did not pair, press and hold the red button between the batteries on the back for four seconds to reset the sensor. Then tap the red button once briefly to pair the sensor with the gateway. If the sensor does not respond, it has already been reset.

How Do You Adjust the Motion Sensor’s Sensitivity?

If your motion sensor is detecting minor movements that you wish to disregard, you can adjust the sensitivity level using the dial located in the sensor itself.

  1. First, open the back of the motion sensor.
  2. Remove the batteries to expose the sensitivity dial, which can be found between the two batteries.
  3. Note the dial’s current position. Use a small screwdriver to turn the dial slightly to the left to decrease sensitivity, and slightly to the right to increase sensitivity.
  4. Finish by reinstalling the batteries, replacing the lid and remounting the sensor.

Note: If you’re not sure how far to turn the dial, you might want to feel where the maximum and minimum sensitivities are located. Turn the dial all the way to the left to reach the minimum sensitivity and all the way to the right to reach the maximum sensitivity. This gives you an idea of the range of this dial. Now, orient the dial to where you think the sensitivity best matches your needs.

How Do You Change the Motion Sensor Battery?

The sensor will automatically alert you when its battery is getting low. You can also check the battery level percentage in the app by locating the sensor under Cameras & Devices.

The batteries are located inside the back cover of the motion sensor. To open, slide the cover down away from the “motion man” icon located on the left side of the sensor. The motion sensor takes two AA batteries.
