Green Building

Green building means designing, constructing and operating your facility to use fewer resources, reduce waste and negative environmental impacts, maximize occupant health and productivity, and decrease life cycle costs. The nationally accepted benchmark for these high-performance buildings is the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System™.

Through our Green Building track, developers and building owners can access technical assistance and financial incentives to help meet their LEED goals. LEED gives you the tools you need to have an immediate and measurable impact on your building’s energy use and overall performance.

Eligibility Requirements

Incentives are available to all nonresidential customers in BGE’s service territory (rate schedules G, GS, GL, P and T). To participate, your project must meet both of the criteria below:

  • Be new construction or a major renovation of an existing commercial building that is registered with the U.S. Green Building Council or required to meet LEED requirements.
  • Have your Comprehensive New Construction Application submitted before construction documents are completed.

Green Building projects also require a building performance modeling study to help you identify and analyze potential energy efficiency projects. BGE will match you with a participating Service Provider when you apply for Technical Services. Funding for up to 50% of this study (limited to $20,000) is available through the Technical Services program.

Enhanced Commissioning

Enhanced commissioning is a type of building commissioning that can provide improved energy performance beyond fundamental commissioning, which is the basic commissioning that every LEED project must complete. We encourage you to pursue additional energy savings through LEED credits for implementing enhanced commissioning (ECx) services, as defined by LEED. You’ll need to decide upfront to complete ECx in the initial design phase, and then it becomes part of the overall commissioning process.

You can access funding for $0.10 per square foot of commissioned space, up to a cap of $20,000 per project, through our Technical Services program.
