Comprehensive Systems for Existing Buildings

When it’s time to replace end-of-life equipment, such as an old chiller, BGE can help you maximize the energy efficiency of your new equipment and examine other systems that interact with it to identify ways to improve overall efficiency and performance.

Comprehensive systems projects offer many benefits, including reduced operating costs, improved building performance, lower long-term maintenance costs and a fast return on your investment.

Take advantage of financial incentives that could cover up to 90% of the incremental cost of installing new energy-efficient measures or up to 75% of the total cost for retrofitting existing equipment, such as lighting.

Eligibility Requirements

Typically, these projects involve chiller replacements. To be eligible for available incentives, your project must include the following:

  • Replacement of existing equipment
  • Installation of new equipment
  • A minimum 150-ton chiller
  • Lighting upgrades in the space conditioned by the chiller to meet efficiency standards
  • A minimum of three energy-saving measures that substantially reduce the demand side of the chiller load

Comprehensive systems projects also require a building performance modeling study to help you identify and analyze potential energy efficiency projects. To participate, you’ll need to have a comprehensive study performed by a BGE-approved technical Service Provider. Funding for up to 50% of the cost of this study (up to $20,000) is available through our Technical Services program, at BGE’s discretion. For more information, refer to the Technical Services application form or contact us at 410.290.1202.

EmPOWER Maryland programs are funded by a charge on your energy bill. EmPOWER programs can help you reduce your energy consumption and save you money. Learn more about EmPOWER Maryland.

The EmPOWER Maryland charge funds programs that can help you reduce your energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions and save you money. Since the inception of the EmPOWER Maryland program in 2008, the programs have saved $14.5 billion on installed measures at a cost of $4.1 billion. In addition to new program costs, this charge includes paying off the uncollected costs that were accrued over time by programs required by the EmPOWER statute and authorized by the Commission. In accordance with House Bill 864 the uncollected amounts will be fully paid by the end of 2032.
